Orange Farm is a large, rapidly growing township and informal settlement located approximately 45 km south of Johannesburg in the Gauteng Province, South Africa. Established in 1988, it is one of the youngest and most isolated communities in the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality.
Key Characteristics & Infrastructure
Settlement Status: Regarded as one of South Africa's largest semi-rural, underdeveloped informal settlements, with a population estimated to be close to one million.

Public Facilities: The area features the Eyethu Orange Farm Mall, the Stretford Clinic, a modern library, and the Orange Farm Regional Park.
Turnkey Programme: As of late 2024 and early 2025, the City of Johannesburg has been implementing the Orange Farm Turnkey Programme, which includes upgrading roads to tar, installing stormwater infrastructure, and developing the Chris Hani Sports Complex and Drieziek Recreation Park.
Socioeconomic Environment
Employment: The township has extremely high unemployment rates (approximately 35% or higher), with many residents commuting to Johannesburg for work.
Poverty: An estimated 70% of the population lives below the poverty line.
Social Challenges: The community faces significant issues, including high crime rates (ranked among the top 30 dangerous precincts), gangsterism in schools, and gender-based violence.
Recent News (January 2026): In early 2026, five men were arrested in connection with the kidnapping and murder of two women found in the nearby Poortjie area. Political groups like the DA continue to advocate for better basic services in informal sectors like Tjovitjo.
